Eighty-four commuters were stranded several feet above the ground when a power failure at the Yesvantpur Metro Station stalled a train for nearly one hour on Monday afternoon. The passengers were evacuated within 15 minutes after the train halted about 200 metres before the Rajajinagar Station.
Last week, a power failure on the same stretch, Reach 3, had resulted in disruption of services for more than half the day between stations. At the time all the trains were in a station and no evacuation was required.This time around, tension prevailed within the coach as passengers were stuck in the viaduct. As the train was trapped on a curve, they tried to peer out to see what the issue was. “We initially thought it would be a small wait and that the train would resume in a few minutes, but eventually, we had to wait for a long time. Then we saw staff members walking outside on the sidewalk,” said Bharath Babu, a resident of Peenya.
Refunds were issued to the evacuated passengers, though a few chose to wait at the Rajajinagar station till services resumed. “It was a power cut and we expect it to resume soon. By the time we exit the station and find other means to get till Nagasandra, it will be very late. Waiting here is better,” said Mahesh Paonam, a resident of T Dasarahalli.The resumption of services took around 50 minutes and services resumed around 1.53 p.m. “The Metro staff spoke to the passengers and explained the procedure for evacuation. They were then escorted off the train and walked on the sidewalk into Rajajinagar metro station. The power to the third rail was cut off during this period,” said UA Vasanth Rao, Spokesperson, BMRCL.
