Bharathidasan University to have three more vocational programmes

TRICHY: Bharathidasan University will now offer three vocational programmes under the project, Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (KAUSHAL).

The University Grants Commission has provided a grant of Rs 350 lakh for the establishment of Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) centre for KAUSHAL at the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) located on the campus. The proposal was submitted by K Parthasarathy, director of IECD, a few months ago. Bharathidasan University is the only university in the state to have secured UGC’s approval for the establishment of the centre.

The three undergraduate programmes are B Voc. (trouble shooting and maintenance of electrical and electronics equipment), B Voc. (automobile technology) and B Voc (logistics and supply chain management).

The university authorities said the main objective of the centre is to create skilled manpower for industry requirements at various levels. The scheme provides mobility from short-term certificate courses to full-fledged postgraduate degree programmes, and research in specialized areas.

The course will also be focusing on research and development in areas related to skill education and development, entrepreneurship, employability and labour market trends at postgraduate and research level.

For conducting the above programmes, the university will be appointing a professor, two associate professors, four assistants, professors, one technical assistant and one multi-tasking staff on a contractual basis.

For the past 10 years, the IECD has imparted vocational and skill development training to school dropouts, unemployed youth, rural women, homemakers, senior citizens and people with physical disabilities, who belong to weaker sections of the society. A total of 1, 93,394 people were trained and certified by the IECD.
